TOLEDO-Robert Winn Baier, age 80, of Toledo died Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Carrington Place of Toledo under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 13, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will be held at 4:00 PM on Monday at Hebron Cemetery in rural Greenfield, Iowa. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 12 from 3-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with family present from 5-7 PM.
Robert was born on September 14, 1929 in rural Orient, Iowa, the son of Winn and Florence (Vandewater) Baier. He graduated from Greenfield High School. Robert was united in marriage to Ruth Pantenburg on January 20, 1951 at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Ames, Iowa. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. Robert was owner and operator of OK Tire in Tama. He was a member of Tama American Legion, VFW, and Fraternal Order of Eagles. Robert was a former volunteer firefighter and chief as well as a former city councilman in Tama. He was a hard worker, but in his spare time enjoyed going to Iowa State football and men's basketball games. Robert was known in his family for making homemade hand cranked ice cream.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and a brother, Jack in infancy.
Survivors include his wife Ruth Baier of Toledo; five children, Kathy Ritter of Marshalltown, Dave (Lori) Baier of Tama, Steve "Elmer" (Shawn) Baier of Tama, Linda (Jim) Beltz of Toledo, and Deborah (Tom) Llewellyn of Tama; eleven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one brother, Bill (Donna) Baier of Greenfield, Iowa; one sister, Helen (the late Jack) Limbaugh of Algona, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; and his Boston Terrier, Max.
A memorial fund has been established.
