MONTOUR-Robert W. Hempy, age 88, of Montour, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 2, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Montour. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 5 to 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Robert was born on August 6, 1921, in rural Montour, the son of Clarence Ray and Bernice (Stoner) Hempy.
He graduated from Montour High School and received a teaching certificate from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught for a short period of time at Whiskey Bottom Country School in Indian Village Township.
On June 26, 1946, he was united in marriage to Frances Niedermann at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He was a lifetime farmer and operated for several years Hickory Hill Lake and Go-Cart Track, which was located on the family farm. Robert was a member of the Living Faith United Methodist Church, Montour Center. He was formerly a member of the Coop Board of Farm Service, Rural Electric Cooperative Board, and the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Robert enjoyed dancing, fishing and was active in the Farmers Market for many years.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his stepfather, Thomas Prusha; two grandsons, Daniel Brent and Ryan Robert Linley; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Hempy; one sister, Helen Slingluff; a half sister, Doris Skyes and a brother-in-law, Gordon Downs.
Survivors include his wife, Frances of Montour; his children, Craig (Donna) Hempy of Montour, Lana (Raymond) Judge of Montour, Tana (Jerry) Boyington of Clarion and Brian Hempy of Montour; ten grandchildren, Tally (Dave) Van Roekel, Kara (Mike) Hempy-Mayer, Preston (April) Linley, Chandra (Jeff) Larson, Angie (James) Pryor, Mandi (Clint) Middleton, Andrea (Derek) Timmerman, Jason (Nikole) Hempy, Jared Hempy and Diana Hempy; sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marian Downs of Marshalltown and Darlene (Joe) Boriskey of Tama; one brother-in-law, Dale Slingluff of Toledo; and many nieces and nephews.
Robert will be remembered for his sense of humor and positive attitude.
A memorial fund has been established.
