TOLEDO-Robert Lyman Scudder, 85, of Toledo, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Carrington Place of Toledo under the care of Iowa Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 1:30 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Greg Boyle officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 26, 2010 from 12:30-1:30 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.
Robert was born on January 18, 1925, in New Boston, Illinois, the son of Charles and Nina (Poffenbarger) Scudder.
He graduated from Toledo High School in 1943. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
On October 24, 1948, he was united in marriage to Jean Alice Titcomb in Grinnell, Iowa.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Robert joined his parents in running Scudder's Maid-Rite, the family business located in downtown Toledo. In 1956, Robert and his parents built a new Maid-Rite restaurant at the junction of highways 63 & 30. Robert continued operation of the restaurant until 1973. He then joined the Iowa Veteran's Home, working in dietary until he retired in 1990.
Robert was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and watching sports on TV.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two sons, Ronald Lee in 1994 and Randall Dean in 1999; a grandson, Zachry Lane; a great-granddaughter, Makynzee Scudder; and three sisters, Francis Scott, June Ross-Weiss and Marge Scudder.
Survivors include his wife, Jean of Toledo; one son, Dennis (Nancy) Scudder of Cedar Falls; three daughters, Catherine (Michael) Savage of Chippewa, WI, Debora (James) Herink of Marshalltown and Roberta (James) Kruse of Martinez, GA; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Gene (Lois) Scudder of Lyman, CO; and many nieces and nephews.
