Roderick was born July 29, 1929 in Toledo, Iowa to Manning E. & C. Hazel (Meves) Hayward. He grew up on the family farm south of Tama and attended school at the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa. After graduating, he joined his mother and his stepfather Harold Walton on the family farm. He then married Coreen Brock on November 4, 1953 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford, Illinois.

After their marriage, Roderick and Coreen lived in the Tama-Toledo area all of their lives, raising their three children there. Early on, Roderick farmed and did construction work. Later, he opened his business, Hayward Upholstery. His store was first on the family farm, then in Tama, and lastly in Toledo. He loved his work and enjoyed the feedback he got from his loyal customers throughout the years, especially when they brought in a favorite piece of furniture they wanted to save. Roderick loved picking up what many would consider junk and work on it to not only to make it useable again, but to restore it to its original beauty. Roderick, along with his wife Coreen, also enjoyed traveling to places in Iowa as well as around the country visiting family and friends and exploring new places. Most importantly, he had a love of sports. He was devoted to his Boston Red Sox and Iowa Hawkeyes. Roderick was especially known for his engaging smile and friendliness.

Roderick is survived by three children, daughter Joan (Pete) Helm of Toledo, son Michael (Theresa) Hayward of Tama and daughter Chris (Rod) Drummer of Tama along with grandchildren Courtney (Trent) Fischer of La Vista, NE, James (Jillisa) Hayward of Ankeny, IA, Benjamin, Nathaniel and Jackson Drummer of Tama as well as step-grandchildren Jessica Drummer of Marshalltown, Laura (Clayton) Edwards of Toledo, IA, and Danny (Claire) Mayo and step-great granddaughter Lily Mayo of Maquoketa, IA. Other survivors include his cousin Lee Meves of Cedar Rapids, sisters-in-law Catherine Hutchinson of Columbia, KY and Sallie Mae Brock of Leslie Co., KY, brothers-in-law James Brock of Scottsdale, AZ, Raymond (Mary) Brock of Bradenton, FL and Richard (Linda) Brock of Cincinnati, OH. Preceding him in death were his wife Coreen Hayward, his mother C. Hazel Walton, stepfather Harold Walton, and his father Manning E. Hayward as well as his brother-in-law Wallace Brock.

Memorials may be directed to either St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama or the Iowa Association of the Deaf.
