Obituary

Roger William Bartling, 91, of Toledo, passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at UnityPoint-Marshalltown Medical Center. It was his wish to be cremated and there will be no public services.

Roger was born on July 8, 1930, in Otter Creek Township, Tama County, Iowa, the son of Emil and Lillie (Ballhorn) Bartling.

Roger served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from July 3, 1953, through June 19, 1954, and served eight years in the Army Reserves.

On August 8, 1953, he married Mary Faught McFate. Roger worked at Grey Iron in Marshalltown for many years. He also farmed, did bulldozing in construction, and worked at the Tama Papermill. Roger liked to fish, go camping and gardening, especially tomatoes. He loved his cats.

Survivors include his stepchildren, Noel (Paul) Duffy of Tama, Michael (Suzanne) McFate of Reinbeck, and Kenne Wolf of Tama; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and many great-great grandchildren; his siblings, LaRue Atchison, Shirley Schultz, Arlene Starits, Darlene Ervin and Larry Bartling; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Mary in 2016; son-in-law, Dick Wolf; brothers, Richard, La Vern, Ronald, Merle; sisters, Lorene Yanda and LaDean Watters.
