Sam Mattingly, 88, of Toledo, passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama. Funeral Services will be held Monday, January 25, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Rev. Dewey Grimes officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Sunday, January 24, 2016 from 2-5 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Sam was born on October 4, 1927, in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Guy and Maude (Barrett) Mattingly.
He grew up and attended country school south of Tama. He moved with his family to State Center and farmed with his folks for a few years and then moved to Toledo. He farmed his entire life, loved livestock and was a dairyman for most of his career.
On January 15, 1950, he was united in marriage to Sarah Zeisneiss of Colo at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in State Center.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Sarah Mattingly of Toledo; four children, Jay (Pam) Mattingly of Le Grand, Connie Mattingly of Toledo, Becky (Frank) Albertsen of Toledo and Joe (Diane) Mattingly of Toledo; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; his siblings, Betty Evans of Woodward, Darlene (Gerald) Youngman of Urbandale, Larry (Betty) Mattingly of Surprise, AZ; his step-sister, Marilyn Fontinel of Tama; his step-sister-in-law, Jean Hanus of Toledo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his step-father, James A. Hanus; one granddaughter, Marie Mattingly; two sisters, Lavina Stansfield and Alice Van Note; one brother, Garland Mattingly; and one step-brother, Jim R. Hanus.
A memorial fund has been established.
