Shirley Agnes Kubik, 84, of Clutier, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at The Bird House-Hospice Home of Johnson County in Iowa City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 10:30 AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in rural Clutier with Father David Kucera as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in rural Clutier. Visitation will be held Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 9:00 AM until the time of service at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
Shirley was born September 17, 1937 in Waterloo, Iowa the daughter of George and Mayme Podhajsky.
Shirley was raised on a farm five miles west of Clutier and attended country school, then went to high school in Traer, graduating in 1956 where she was the Homecoming Queen. When Shirley started school, she only spoke Czech and her first English word was "squirrel."
She married the love of her life Freddie Kubik on November 26th, 1957 at St Wenceslaus Catholic Church in rural Clutier. Freddie and Shirley enjoyed a much remembered six week honeymoon car trip to California. They made their home on the same farm as Shirley was raised. Three children blessed their marriage Michael, Lori and Lisa. She proudly was a farm wife keeping a home, tending a large garden as well as raising chickens, ducks and geese while Freddie farmed the land.
Shirley was a member of St Wenceslaus Catholic Church until it was closed then St Paul's Catholic Church in Traer. She was involved in Corpus Christi celebration, rosary society, KD Lodge and FCSLA as treasurer. Shirley was a ZCBJ officer and was also a board member of the Clutier Library.
Shirley was most proud of her Czech heritage and was eager to share that with all. She was active in the Farmers Market where she was known for her rohlicky, kolache, bismarcks and noodles. She sang in the local Czech Trio dressed in traditional costume. She was also a skilled seamstress sewing for her family making many baby blankets and afghans for the church at sewing days.
She loved plants, animals, the outdoors and was a Master Gardener. Most of all she loved her family dearly including all nieces and nephews.
Survivors include one son, Michael Kubik of Iowa City; two daughters, Lori (Curtis) Fuller of Solon and Lisa (Jesse) Lain of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Adam Fuller of West Branch and Ashley (Alec) Slocum of Boulder, CO; sister, Karlene Cochran of Traer; several nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Robert (Sandra) Kubik.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Freddie in 2015; sister-in-law, Georgiana Uchytil; brothers-in-law, Pep Cochran, Dr. Rudy Kubik, Leonard Kubik, and Tony Kubik.
A memorial fund will be established.
