Obituary

Shirley L. Stein, 84, a lifelong resident of Toledo, passed away Friday, August 28, 2015 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama after being in declining health for the past few years. She was under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 from 9:30 AM until the time of service at the funeral home.

Shirley Lavonne Brown was born on March 22, 1931, in Toledo, Iowa, to Rinzo Lawrence Brown and Elsie Helen Jacobs Brown. She attended and graduated from the Toledo Public Schools and was a "Forty-Niner"--a member of the Toledo High School Class of 1949. Shirley was drum majorette, and enjoyed attending and helping organize class reunions over the years.
After high school, Shirley worked for the local telephone company and other local businesses, including Stein Bros. Motor Co.
She married George Stein on July 7, 1960 in Chicago, Illinois. They were the parents of two sons, Jeffrey and Michael.
In addition to working as bookkeeper for Geo. Stein Motor Co., she became the owner and operator of the dealership after her husband's death. She also assisted in various family-owned Toledo businesses. She was later employed by Grace United Methodist Church in Marshalltown.
Shirley was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo. She devoted herself to supporting her children and their activities, and enjoyed talking about her family during morning coffee with friends in downtown Toledo.
Survivors include her sons and their wives, Jeff Stein and Carole Lackey of Denver, Iowa, and Mike and Kym Stein of Tama, Iowa; a step-grandson, Christopher Laughlin of Fairfield, Iowa, and a step-great-granddaughter, Kayleah Laughlin of Tama, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband George on July 2, 1985; her parents; an infant sister, Donna Jane Brown; and a step-granddaughter, Denise Laughlin.
The family thanks the staff of Iowa River Hospice of Marshalltown for their support during Shirley's final illness.
