Vera Evelyn Sevcik, 98, of Clutier, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2022 at MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at 10:30 AM St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer. Interment will follow the luncheon at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in rural Clutier. Visitation will be held Monday, February, 28, 2022 from 5-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a Vigil Service at 7 PM. It was Vera's wish the casket be closed for public viewing.
Vera Evelyn Maiden was born on December 6, 1923, in Tama, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford L. and Lillian (Petersen) Maiden.
She graduated from Tama High School in 1941. Vera taught school in the Columbia and Carroll Townships for five years.
On October 30, 1945, she was united in marriage to Adolph Joseph Sevcik at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama and to this union five children were born, Edwin, Robert, Jean, Verna, and James. In 1945, they starting farming and lived all their married life on a farm northwest of Clutier.
Vera was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clutier, Rosary Society, and taught catechism for a number of years until its closure. She then became a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer. Vera was also a member of the Clutier American Legion Auxiliary #453, and the Senior Citizens Club.
Vera enjoyed gardening, lawn work, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed playing cards, reading many beautiful poems, and doing things for her family.
Survivors include five children, Edwin (Judy) Sevcik of Hiawatha, Robert Sevcik of Littleton, CO, Jean (Jack) Ferguson of Newton, Verna (Bill) Hitsman of Milo, and James Sevcik of Grinnell; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Adolph on February 15, 1987; five brothers, Wilbur, Paul, Merle, Gaylord and Clifford Maiden.
Memorials may be directed to Muscular Dystrophy or the American Heart Association.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Sunrise Hill Assisted Living for all the care shown to her.
