TAMA-Verlyn H. Shadden, 85 years 5 days, of Tama, passed away August 3, 2011 at Union Park Health Services in Des Moines. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Friday, August 5 from 5 to 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Verlyn was born on July 29, 1926 in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of David and Vertie (Wright) Shadden.
On December 21, 1946, he was united in marriage to Joyce Ruth Rogers in Tama, Iowa. Verlyn farmed outside of Tama for many years and retired from Lennox in 1986 after twenty-seven years. His hobbies included hunting and in his younger years fishing. He enjoyed woodworking and life on the farm. His greatest enjoyment was baking cookies for his great-grandchildren and the time that he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death was his parents; his wife of fifty-three years, Joyce on March 23, 1999; his great-grandson, Adrian Shadden; his siblings, Darl Shadden, Faye Fair and Fern Shadden, Robert Shadden, Lenora Shope and Geneva Backen.
Survivors include his three children, Loretta (Tom) Coder of Shellsburg, Diana (Don) Anderson of Des Moines, and David (Charlotte) Shadden of Chelsea; five grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and one sister, Betty Depew of Council Bluffs.
