William Ray "Bill" Darter's Obituary
TOLEDO-William Ray "Bill" Darter, 75, of Toledo passed away Monday, July 23, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 10:30 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Sheridan Cemetery in rural Malcom. Visitation will be held Friday, July 27 from 5 - 8 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
As Bill always said, "It all started back in 1937 in Paxton, IL, on Market Street, Apartment B." He was born on January 21, 1937, the son of Earl Gardner and Kathleen Florence (Whitcomb) "Kaye" Darter.
He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1956 and attended Marshalltown Community College for one year. Bill ran track and participated in the Drake Relays. He was also involved in theatre.
He married MaryAnn Brainerd on August 1, 1957, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They later divorced. On May 26, 1973, he married Jo Graff at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
He was a professional meat cutter, working at many area grocery stores including Gene's Super Valu. Bill was employed with Tama Pack for twenty five years, only missing two days in that time. After his retirement, he worked at Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel.
Bill enjoyed playing cribbage, fishing and camping on the river, bowling, cooking, playing horseshoes and watching movies, especially classic ones. He was also a history buff. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and attending their events and activities.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Carol Eggers, Betty Klaas, and Nancy Anstrom.
Survivors include his wife, Jo of Toledo; seven children, Jeffrey Darter of Columbia, MO, Joseph (Mai) Darter of Marshalltown, RaeAnn (Stu) Jacobs of Lewisville, TX, Jonathan "John" Darter of St. Joseph, MO, Peggy (Joe) Hannam of Marshalltown, Jon (Linda) Darter of Minneapolis, MN, and Jason Darter of Marshalltown; fourteen grandchildren, Megan, Michael and Emily Darter, Chelsea and Dexter Darter, Katie, Sam, and Ben Jacobs, Zachary and Jacob Darter, Matthew, Raechel, and Olivia Hannam, and Braylon Darter; one sister, Doris Vonceil "Von" Sherman of Marshalltown; a sister-in-law, Kay (Nick) Gloe of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial fund has been established.
