December 8, 1932 – April 19, 2014
TOLEDO-William R. Maertens, 81, of Toledo passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 at his home. A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 from 5 - 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 1:30 PM at First United Methodist Church in Nora Springs with Pastor Jerry Avise-Rouse officiating. A private family interment will be held at a future date.
William was born on December 8, 1932 in Rudd the son of Sylvin and Minnie (Boerjan) Maertens. He attended school in Nora Springs, graduating in 1951. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1954. Bill was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a Past Commander and fifty year member of the American Legion. Bill was united in marriage to Iola Wernet in August of 1955 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He was employed in the livestock feed industry as a salesman. Bill's greatest passions were fishing and family gatherings.
Surviving Bill is his wife Iola of Toledo; four children, Mike (Ann) Maertens of Ankeny, Dennis (Heidi) Maertens of Clear Lake, Marie (Jim) DeMatteis of Waukee, and Rhonda (Bill) Boyd of Toledo; seven grandchildren; three step grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Shirley McGonigle of Clarion; one brother, John (Pat) Maertens of Elk River, MN; and a sister-in-law, Joan Maertens of Mason City.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Roy Maertens; and a brother-in-law, Rick McGonigle
A memorial fund has been established.
