Obituary

TOLEDO-William R. Moran, age 87, a resident of Grandview Acres in Toledo, died on Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at Grandview Acres due to a lengthy illness. A Funeral Liturgy will be held Friday, September 14, 2007 at 9:30 AM at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher officiating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be Thursday, September 13, 2007 from 4-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
William R. Moran was born on March 27, 1920, in Tower City, North Dakota, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Haffey) Moran.
He graduated from high school and then attended Creighton University and the University of Iowa. Bill served his country in the U.S. Army for twenty-four years, retiring at the rank of Captain. After basic training, he served with the 115th Calvary at Fort Lewis in Washington. Bill's duties included patrol of the west coast. He then attended O.C.S. and became a 2nd Lieutenant. He then served with the 6th Army in Austria, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. After leaving military service in 1945, Bill returned to duty in 1948. He served from Ft. Riley in Kansas. At this time, Bill served three years as a R.O.T.C. instructor at the University of Iowa. He then served as an intelligence instructor in Baltimore, Maryland. Bill also spent three years in Germany, as well as service in Washington, D.C. Bill also spent ten years working for the C.I.A., retiring in 1975. While in the C.I.A., he traveled in both Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the C.I.A., Bill worked for the State of Iowa. He retired from that position in 1984. During Bill's retirement years, he was active in Knights of Columbus, Toastmasters, and the Toledo American Legion and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Joseph C. Moran; and one sister, Trudy Kirchner.
Survivors include one son, Mr. and Mrs. Michael K. Moran of La Grande, Oregon; two grandchildren, Travis and Kaytie Moran; Bill was also a beloved uncle, great-uncle, and great-great uncle to many in his family
