TAMA-William R. "Diz" Steies, 63, of Tama, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Brian Gumm officiating. Private Interment will be held at a later date. A Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday, April 5, 2014 from 9 AM until the time of service at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.

William Steies was born on November 1, 1950 in Menomonie, Wisconsin, the son of Robert Joseph and Doris Eva (Timmerman) Steies.

He graduated from South Tama High School in 1968.

William was previously a Police Officer for the Tama Police Department, a bartender and manager at Rube's Steakhouse in Montour, and operated Hoskins House Bed & Breakfast in Tama. He also worked at Meskwaki Casino and was a rural mail carrier for the Tama Post Office. Diz enjoyed riding his motorcycle, traveling, and auto racing having attended the Indy 500 for 38 consecutive years. He loved playing cards, cooking and baking for others. Diz drove a support vehicle and cooked for a local group during RAGBRAI for several years. He especially enjoyed meeting people and telling stories about his experiences.

Survivors include his siblings, Kathy (Roger) Schwake of Waterloo, Tim Steies of Belle Plaine and Becky (Joe) Thiessen of Toledo; several nieces, nephews and many friends

Preceding him in death were his parents.

A memorial fund has been established.
